Salzburg City
The city of Salzburg is the capital of the federal state of Salzburg.
With 150.000 inhabitants Salzburg is Austria's 4th biggest city. Only Vienna, Graz and Linz have more citizens.
Salzburg is known for its baroque architecture and Alpine setting. Some
people might also know that Salzburg was the birthplace of the popular
composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the setting for the musical and
the film "Sound of Music".
The river called "Salzach" runs through the city, and the closest
alpine peak – the 1972m Untersberg – is only a some few kilometers away
from the city center.
The old town of Salzburg is strongly dominated by its baroque towers.
The many churches in Salzburg testify that godfearing citizens lived
here in all times. The city center of Salzburg is surrounded by two
smaller mountains, the Mönchsberg and the Kapuzinerberg.
Salzburg is about 150 km away from the Bavarian capital Munich, and 300 km from the Austrian capital Vienna.
