Salzburg History
The first traces of human settlements were found in the area of Salzburg since the Neolithic Age. The first known settlers were Celts, who created a camp in the year 15 BC. The environment for the camp was perfect, and so it developed itself to a little town. After the Romean soldiers came to the area, the town was occupied and named "Juvavum". This was around the year 45. Juvavum became one of the most important cities in the Romean province Noricum.
After the Romean Empire broke down, Salzburg was colonized by Bavarian settlers, and became a part of Bavaria.
In the 14th century Salzburg was able to receive independence from Bavaria. Salzburg stayed an independent nation until the beginning of the 19th century.
